...Making it funny from the ground up...

Evan Smith is a writer, screenwriting consultant, guest speaker, and author of the bestselling guide Writing Television Sitcoms. For years, he has helped other writers do their best work by using his method for creating premise-driven comedy. Rather than force jokes into an unfunny script, this organic approach pulls humor from a story by...

  • Weaving funny elements into the overall premise
  • Exploiting and compounding those elements as you structure sequences and scenes
  • Drawing from that built-in humor to create pages full of natural, seamless jokes

It’s all about writing scripts that are funny from the ground up, rather than trying to fix unfunny scripts by cramming jokes in during rewrites.
